Black Lives Matter – An Open Letter from The Brown Bride

In light of the anti-racist discussions that have transpired over social media and between friends and family, we would like to publicly express our support for the Black Lives Matter movement. We’ll say it again:

Black Lives Matter.

As South Asians, we know that colorism is a deeply rooted problem within our community, and it certainly pervades our wedding traditions, customs, and rituals. As a growing online platform for South Asian brides and wedding vendors, we are committed to actively educating ourselves and rooting out these harmful views and practices that hold us back as a society.

Our team has been actively discussing ways we can take action beyond words and Instagram story re-posts. While we believe our personal education and evolution will be an ongoing process, we will commit to the following tangible actions:

• • Use our platform to highlight Black wedding vendors in the US & Canada
  • Educate our readers on harmful South Asian wedding traditions that perpetuate racist stereotypes
  • Vote for leaders within our local districts who are focused on Justice Reform and ending police brutality

We know that we can’t stop at a few social media platitudes and petition signatures. The revolution is just beginning, and we’ll continue to stand with the Black community along the way.
